SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION

The Arts & Entertainment Advocacy Clinic, the Journal of International Commercial Law, and the Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property at Scalia Law are pleased to invite you to an academic symposium on the best practices in rights clearance.

This symposium will bring together scholars, industry representatives, and visual artists for a lively discussion about when and whether rights need to be cleared when using the work of others.

During the networking reception to follow the event, student attorneys from the Arts & Entertainment Advocacy Clinic at Scalia Law will be available to consult one-on-one with attendees about copyright questions they may have and to help them assess whether it might be fruitful to refer their matter for further advice to the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (or a Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts organization in their area).

If you are interested in a meeting, please let us know by e-mailing gmucopyrightclinic@gmail.com with a short description of the issue you are facing.

1:25-1:30 PM Welcome Remarks

1:30-3:00 PM Panel 1: Understanding the Legal and Business Environment Visual Artists Work In

The digital media marketplace has brought challenges and opportunities for visual artists. • Nancy Wolff, Digital Media Licensing Association
  • Jeff Sedlik, PLUS
  • Lateef Mtima, Institute for Intellectual Property & Social Justice
  • Moderator: Prof. Sandra Aistars, Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University, Sr. Scholar & Director of Copyright Research and Policy, Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property

3:15-5:15 PM Panel 2: A Discussion With Visual Artists

Visual artists, like other artists, may both include the work of others in their work and find that other creators have used their work. What norms, whether formal or informal, do they follow in determining when and whether to seek permission? What do they expect of one another? What resources are available? What gaps do they see in the law and public understanding? What questions do they have?

  • Pieter Folkens, Graphic Artists Guild
  • Sean Fitzgerald, North American Nature Photography Association
  • John Harrington, National Press Photographers Association
  • Peter Krogh, American Society of Media Photographers
  • Amanda Reynolds, Plume Photography
  • Moderator: Mickey Osterreicher, National Press Photographers Association
